I’m liking what I’m hearing out of Brooklyn-based Stars & Letters Records. Earlier this year the label gave us the epic Shocking Pinks trilogy album, Guilt Mirrors, and in July they’ll be releasing a new EP by fellow New Zealanders Bad Blocks.
In anticipation, they’ve recently re-issued Bad Blocks’ debut EP, Weekday, which was self-released in 2012.
I’m also really liking what I’m hearing out of Oceania of late. Two of my favorite records this year, the aforementioned Guilt Mirrors (granted, the one-disc, 11-track version as opposed to the 33-track marathon) and Chet Faker’s Built on Glass, were born in New Zealand and Australia, respectively.
A few years ago, a friendly debate developed between myself and an extended member of the Idle Time family. It was a Sweden versus Australia comparison, and, even when I broadened the scope to allow her the inclusion of bands from NZ, my playlist arguments won out every time.
By 2014, however, the competition could be much closer than I’d care to admit…
